Clouds Return

A low pressure system to our southeast will slowly move north for the beginning of our work week. Cloud cover will gradually increase from the south starting overnight tonight. Lows will drop back into the mid to upper 40s.

Monday will bring partly to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 70s. The cloud cover will be thickest on Tuesday, with a slight chance of a few showers in the southeast on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Most of central Illinois will stay dry through the middle of the week, though. Highs will hang out in the low to mid 70s into Thursday.

By Thursday night, a cold front and associated low pressure system will slide in from the northwest. This will bring a slight chance at showers Thrusday night and Friday, along with a very cold push of air into the weekend. Look for highs to only hit the mid to upper 50s (that's right, 50s) Friday through Sunday.

Quiet Rest of the Week

After a foggy start to the morning, sunshine peeked through this afternoon. We're looking at some clearing for the overnight hours, with lows around 50 degrees.

The cold front that pulled through yesterday has stalled out over southern Illinois. That will keep us partly cloudy on Thursday, with highs in the low 70s.

As the front moves south on Friday, sunshine will build in for the weekend. Look for highs to warm closer to the mid 70s on Friday and Saturday. After a brief push of cooler air from a low pressure system to the northeast on Sunday, a ridge of high pressure will build in for next week. Sunshine and southerly winds will warm us into the mid to upper 70s by Wednesday.

Possibile Watch Later Today

SUMMARY...AN ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS
CNTRL IL INTO WRN IND THIS AFTERNOON. ISOLATED LARGE HAIL AND WIND
DAMAGE WILL INITIALLY BE THE MAIN THREAT. AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT
COULD ALSO DEVELOP LATER THIS AFTERNOON. WW ISSUANCE MAY BECOME
NECESSARY ACROSS THE REGION ONCE THE SCENARIO BEGINS TO UNFOLD.

DISCUSSION...THUNDERSTORMS ARE CURRENTLY INITIATING AND INCREASING
IN INTENSITY JUST TO THE EAST OF A DEEPENING SFC LOW CENTERED OVER
NE MO. THE STORMS ARE LOCATED ON THE NERN EDGE OF INSTABILITY AND ON
THE NOSE OF A MID-LEVEL JET MOVING INTO THE REGION FROM THE WEST
NORTHWEST. THE STRONG MID-LEVEL FLOW ASSOCIATED WITH THE JET IS
CREATING FAVORABLE SHEAR PROFILES FOR SEVERE STORMS IN SPITE OF THE
WEAK INSTABILITY IN PLACE. THE WSR-88D VWP AT SPRINGFIELD IL
CURRENTLY SHOWS ABOUT 65 KT OF 0-6 KM SHEAR WITH SUBSTANTIAL VEERING
WITH HEIGHT FROM 2 TO 3 KM. THIS COULD SUPPORT A SUPERCELL THREAT AS
LOW-LEVEL MOISTURE ADVECTS NWD INTO THE MCD AREA AND INSTABILITY
INCREASES. 500 MB TEMPS OF -15 C TO -19C WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF
ISOLATED LARGE HAIL WITH THE MORE INTENSE CORES. IN
ADDITION...LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES HAVE STEEPENED SOME ACROSS ECNTRL
IL INTO WRN IND AS SHOWN ON MESOSANALYSIS WITH 0-3 KM LAPSE RATES
NOW AROUND 7.0 C/KM. THIS ALONG WITH THE STRONG WIND FIELDS AT
LOW-LEVELS MAY SUPPORT AN ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE AS CELLS MATURE LATE
THIS AFTERNOON. AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT COULD ALSO DEVELOP
ESPECIALLY IF THE CELLS CAN ROTATE AND PERSIST.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE DAMAGING WIND IN EXCESS OF 60 MILES PER
HOUR...DESTRUCTIVE HAIL...DEADLY LIGHTNING...AND VERY HEAVY RAIN. FOR
YOUR PROTECTION MOVE TO AN INTERIOR ROOM ON THE LOWEST FLOOR OF YOUR
HOME OR BUSINESS. HEAVY RAINS FLOOD ROADS QUICKLY SO DO NOT DRIVE
INTO AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROAD.

Showers Likely Today

A larger, upper level low pressure trof will spill cloud cover in this morning. As a series of surface low pressure centers move through, showers will develop during the day today. A few sprinkles may build this morning, but our best chance of rain will occur this afternoon.

Highs will only reach the upper 60s and low 70s. You’ll want to bring an umbrella to the football field tonight, as showers may last into the evening.

After a mostly dry overnight, a few sprinkles are possible on Saturday morning. Skies will clear out for the rest of the weekend, but highs will only hit the low 60s on Saturday and Sunday.

We’ll warm things back up into the mid 70s by the middle of next week, but rain chances will also move in. Showers and thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday and Wednesday, before sun returns for the end of the week.

A Very Cool Tuesday

Breezy northwesterly winds and dry air will filter in today. We’ll start off the morning in the 40s, with highs only reaching the low to mid 60s this afternoon.

Clear skies and calm winds overnight will plummet lows into the upper 30s and low 40s. The last time we saw temperatures that cool was last April.

Strengthening southerly winds and sunshine for the middle of the week will warm us into the low 70s Wednesday and Thursday. The warm up won’t last long though, as a cold front builds in on Friday. This will bring us a good chance at showers for the day time, with much cooler temperatures into the weekend. Highs Friday through Sunday will only reach the mid 60s. Sunshine early next week will help bump us back into the low 70s through Tuesday.

Showers & Stomrs Expected Tonight

A cold front is pushing through the state this afternoon, sparking showers & storms across the area.  Line of storms should work through the area through the mid evening, and clearing the area after midnight.

Fog This AM, Storms This PM

A DENSE FOG ADVISORY is in effect for most of the area until 10 am this morning. Visibilities could drop below a quarter mile for your commute.

Cloud cover moving in from the northwest will make it difficult to get rid of the fog, and keep highs in the mid 70s. A cold front will spark up showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. It will be a quick round of rain, before we clear things out overnight.

Much cooler air will filter in behind the front, with lows in the mid 40s and highs in the mid 60s on Tuesday. We’ll warm things back into the low 70s for the middle of the week, but a cold front on Friday will cool us way back for the weekend. Look for highs in the mid 60s on Saturday and Sunday.
