Looking Ahead to August

As we wrap up the month of July, we look ahead at what to expect for the month of August.  The one month outlook keeps much of the Midwest warmer than normal, and drier than normal.

Heating Up Again

Warmer air has moved back into the Midwest, allowing for a surge of 90° heat to return to the area.  Lows tonight will be a little more on the warm side then the past few previous evenings.

Temperatures will again jump to the middle 90's through the afternoon on Tuesday.

If we hit above 90° tomorrow, it would tie a record amount of 26- the most days at or above 90° in the month of July, set back in 1901

Corn Outlook Not Looking Good

The USDA has come out with its weekly crop report for the state of Illinois.    The drought continues to hamper efforts for farmers across the state, with again below average rainfall for the past week, with extremely hot temperatures adding insult to injury.    Corn conditions were rated 38 percent very poor, 33 percent poor, 24 percent fair, and 5 percent good.

Meanwhile Soybean conditions were rated 27 percent very poor, 29 percent poor, 35 percent fair, and 9 percent good.

Quiet Work Week

The forecast looks quiet to start off the work week. Skies will be nothing more than partly cloudy this afternoon, with highs in the low 90s. Clearing skies overnight will drop lows into the upper 60s and low 70s. If you're heading to the Chiefs' game tonight, it's going to be quite warm.

A quick, weak cold front on Tuesday morning will turn winds out of the north, but won't do much to cool us down. In fact, as breezy winds mix things up in our atmosphere, warmer air from the upper levels will make its way to the surface. Look for highs to hit the mid 90s tomorrow afternoon.

Sunshine and low 90s are expected through Thursday, before a storm system slides in at the end of the week. A few waves of upper level energy are possible on Friday, ahead of the main wave on Saturday. Look for on and off thunderstorms those two days and highs in the low 90s. We'll clear things out starting on Sunday. Mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s are likely into next Tuesday.

Leftover showers are lingering in the area this morning, after a cold front edged into central Illinois last night. Redevelopment is expected along the front this afternoon. The best chance for strong to severe storms will be in our southeastern most counties. Damaging winds will be the primary threat, but we could also see some large hail and dangerous lightning.

Storms will move out overnight tonight, with gradual clearing into Friday. Lows will drop back into the mid to upper 60s. A few clouds are possible Friday afternoon with a wave of upper level energy passing to our northeast. Still, it looks to be a nice day with highs in the mid to upper 80s. High pressure will keep us clear on Saturday and Sunday, before an upper level wave brings a chance of storms on Monday. Temperatures will hit the upper 80s and low 90s through the middle of next week.

More cloud cover and a few isolated storms are possible tonight. Although the best chance of severe weather will likely be northwest of here, we could see a few strong storms edge into our northwestern most counties during the late evening and overnight hours. Lows will only drop back into the mid to upper 70s.

A cold front on Thursday will bring us a good chance at showers and thunderstorms. The best chance will be in the afternoon hours, with highs reaching the upper 80s and low 90s.
Behind the front, highs will only hit the mid to upper 80s through the weekend. Friday through Sunday is looking dry, but a wave of upper level energy on Monday could bring us a few more storms. Highs will be right around 90 for the beginning of next week.

A front moving through the area will bring us rain chances through midweek. Today, it will move through as a cold front, popping up scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Some of these storms could be strong to severe. All of central Illinois is under a slight risk of severe weather, with large hail and damaging winds as the primary threat.

Tomorrow, as it slides east as a warm front, we’ll warm things up into the triple digits and see some clearing in our skies. A second cold front on Thursday will bring our best chance at rain. A round of showers and thunderstorms will pull through during the day, moving southeast by Friday. We’ll finally cool our temperatures back into the upper 80s this weekend. After a dry weekend, storm chances move back in with a wave of upper level energy by Monday.

Slowly Clearing Out

Rain totals from last night:

A line of storms that developed along a stationary front last night is pulling southeast early this morning. A few more storms could form along the front in the southeast this afternoon, but a large portion of central Illinois will be done with the rain.

For most of us, highs today will reach the low to mid 90s. In the south and southwest, mid to upper 90s are possible. That’s why a HEAT ADVISORY is still in effect for Schuyler, Cass, and Menard counties until 7 PM tonight.

Winds will switch out of the north overnight, dropping lows into the upper 60s and low 70s. Friday will be the coolest day of the week. Still, expect sunshine and highs in the upper 80s. Sunny skies and southerly winds will warm us right back up this weekend. Highs are expected in the low to mid 90s through Sunday. Early next week, we’ll bump back up into the mid to upper 90s. By Tuesday and Wednesday, though, showers and thunderstorms may fire as our upper level weather pattern becomes unsettled. Highs will level off in the low 90s with more cloud cover through the end of next week.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH ISSUED

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR BUREAU, HENRY, LaSALLE, LIVINIGSTON, MARSHALL, PUNTAM AND STARK COUNTIES UNTIL 8 PM.

Primary threat with any storms that develop this afternoon and evening will be damaging winds, with some larger hail in some of the thunderstorms.

Heat, Strong Storms Possible Today

A HEAT ADVISORY is still in effect until 7 PM tonight. Temperatures will hit the mid to upper 90s, with heat indices as high as 105.

A cold front sliding into the area from the north will start to bring change to the forecast, though. Cloud cover will increase during the day and storms will begin firing along the front in the north this afternoon. Some of these storms could be strong to severe. Large hail and damaging winds are the primary threat, but heavy rain and frequent lightning are also possible.

After a few scattered storms overnight, a second round of rain will develop in the south tomorrow afternoon. Overnight lows will drop back into the mid 70s, with highs tomorrow in the low 90s.

We'll clear things out on Friday for the coolest day of the week. Still, highs will hit the upper 80s and low 90s through Saturday. Sunshine and southerly winds team up for Sunday and Monday to drive temperatures into the mid 90s. An upper level disturbance for the middle of next week will increase cloud cover and keep temperatures in the low 90s through the end of next week.

Today will be sunny, but a cold front tomorrow will bring back cloud cover and storm chances Wednesday afternoon. The front will stall out into Thursday, keeping rain chances around for another day. Temperatures will cool slightly into the upper 80s and low 90s through the end of the week.

Sunshine returns in full force this weekend. Highs on Saturday and Sunday will reach the low to mid 90s. Cloud cover begins increasing on Tuesday as a low pressure system to our north slides east. This could bring storms back to the area as early as Wednesday.

Drought Update

More of Illinois has been upgraded to a Severe Drought in the U.S. Drought Monitor's latest update. Crop damage remains the primary concern in central Illinois, but high fire danger and water shortages also pose a problem for the summer months.

We saw a few light showers move through the metro area yesterday morning, but we still only recorded 0.01" of rain at the airport. This puts us well behind for the month, season, and year. To give you some perspective, during the drought of 1988, the month of July only saw 0.33" of rain that year and remains the driest July on record for Peoria.

Not many chances for a good soaking rain look to pop up in our 8 day outlook. However, we could see a good chance at a few storms in the area early this weekend.

Two waves of upper level energy will slide in over the next few days, hopefully bringing some rain with them. The first will slide in on Friday afternoon, popping up a few storms in the southeast. The next wave will dive in from the northwest on Saturday, keeping rain chances into the weekend.

We'll dry things out early next week with breezy southwesterly winds taking temperatures into the lo to mid 90s through the middle of next week.
