Happy Halloween!

It looks like more of the same for our Halloween forecast. Sunshine and breezy winds stick around keeping highs in the low 50s. Conditions will be cool and crisp for trick-or-treating. Temperatures will be in the mid 40s as the kids are heading out with low 40s as they are heading home.

Overnight lows will drop back into the upper 20s and low 30s. Thursday will bring highs in the mid 50s before cloud cover moves back in on Friday. A storm system moving in from the northwest looks to bring our next chance of scattered showers on Saturday. Highs for the weekend will be right around 50 degrees. Next week is looking sunny and dry with temperatures hovering in the low 50s.

Winds to Continue Through Wednesday

Breezy conditions have moved in as a result of the remnants of Sandy moving on shore along the east coast.  Max wind gusts range in the 20-30 mph range as of Tuesday afternoon.

Winds should slowly diminish, but not until late Wednesday night, leaving us with a breezy Tuesday overnight and Halloween afternoon.   Conditions may be a bit brisk for trick or treaters Wednesday night, as temperatures dip to the mid to upper 40's early Wednesday evening.

Windy, Mostly Sunny Today

As post-tropical storm Sandy continues to slowly move west and northwest today, breezy winds and cloud cover will push into Central Illinois. We will see some clearing this afternoon, but wind gusts upwards of 35 mph out of the north will limit highs to the upper 40s and low 50s. Clear skies overnight will drop lows into the upper 20s and low 30s.

Temperatures will warm into the mid 50s by the end of the work week, with not much change expected in sky condition through Friday. Clouds will build back in on Saturday as a storm system moves in from the northwest. Shower chances will begin late Saturday night, lasting through Sunday night. Temperatures will drop a few degrees into the beginning of next week.

COOL BUT DRY FOR REST OF THE WEEK:  Mostly sunny conditions will continue for the rest of the week, with temperatures remaining a good 5-10 degrees below average.

Steady Weather Pattern

As Hurricane Sandy makes land fall and stalls out over the next few days, we're looking at a fairly stagnant weather pattern through midweek. For central Illinois, that will mean sunshine and breezy winds out of the northwest. Highs will reach the upper 40s and low 50s, with lows in the low 30s through Friday.

We could see a few clouds as Sandy moves west on Wednesday and Thursday, but most of us will be clear as a ridge of high pressure moves in by Saturday. Southerly winds will warm temperatures into the mid 50s this weekend, while a storm system moves in. We could see shower activity as early as Sunday afternoon, lasting into the day on Monday.

Chilly Weekend Ahead

All new weather webcast can be found at the right hand portion of your screen.

FREEZE WATCH TONIGHT:  Mostly clear skies with near to below freezing temperatures.  Overnight lows anticipated to fall to the lower 30's, with a few upper 20's in spots.

COOL WEEKEND:  Highs pressure settles in, solidifying cooler air mass across much of the Midwest.  Highs on Saturday only rise to the upper 40's, and Sunday top out near 50.

STAYING COOL NEXT WEEK:  Temperatures will remain a good 5-10 degrees below average for the bulk of the next week thanks in part to strong high pressure and  the remnants of Sandy making landfall on the east coast.   Sandy shouldn't make a direct impact precipitation wise for us during the week, but she will help keep our temperatures fairly cool.  Highs for much of the week will start off near 50, and only rise to the mid 50's by the end of the week.

Much Cooler Weekend

Temperatures dropping quite a bit behind yesterday's cold front. After a morning in the 30s, sunshine will only warm us into the upper 40s and low 50s this afternoon. Saturday and Sunday will feel very similar. Next week will start off with sunshine and highs in the low 50s. Cloud cover returns for the middle of the week as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy move inland. We'll likely stay dry through next weekend though, with temperatures slowly warming into the mid 50s by the end of next week.

Getting Colder

All new weather webcast can be found at the right hand portion of your screen.

SHOWERS EARLY:  Cold front will push through sparking showers with a few thunderstorms during the mid evening hours.  Rain should clear the area by Midnight.

SHARP COOLDOWN:  Once the front pushes through, temperatures will fall quite quickly into the overnight.  Skies will slowly clear close to daybreak.  Overnight lows anticipated to fall into the mid 30's.

CHILLY FRIDAY:  Sunshine should return to the area, but it won't help in the temperature department as cool Canadian air settles in.  Highs will top out in the lower 50's.

WEEKEND CHILL:  Not much change for Saturday and Sunday.  Mostly sunny skies will prevail under high pressure, but temperature will remain well below normal.  Highs for the weekend will only top out in the upper 40's

COOL NEXT WEEK:  Thanks to the surge of cool air, and with the assistance of the remnants of Hurricane Sandy, which is anticipated to make landfall somewhere between Washington D.C. and Boston early next week, temperatures will remain cool.  Highs for much of the week will hold in the lower 50's.  We should remain dry for this time period.

Warm, but Rainy Afternoon

Breezy southerly winds continue to pump in warmth and moisture today. Look for highs to hit the low 70s.

A cold front moving in will increase cloud cover this morning and bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms early this afternoon. The rain will move east into the evening and overnight hours, drying out by early Friday. Lows will drop back into the upper 30s.

Friday is looking sunny, but much cooler temperatures will file in by the weekend. Highs through Sunday will only reach the upper 40s and low 50s. Temperatures will stay cool into early next week, slowly warming into the mid 50s by Friday.

Rain Chances and Cooler Temperatures

All new weather webcast can be found at the right hand of your screen.

QUIET EVENING:  Very mild conditions with partly cloudy skies for our Wednesday night.  Overnight lows dip to the low to mid 60's

RAIN THURSDAY:  Cold front will push through the state during the afternoon and evening hours.  Showers with a few imbedded thunderstorms could be possible during this period.  We are not anticipating severe weather with these storms.  Highs before the rain should reach into the mid 70's

COOLING DOWN:  Sharply cooler air will move in behind the front as early as Thursday night.  Overnight lows will fall to the upper 30's, while highs in Friday only top out in the mid 50's

CHILLY WEEKEND:  Cool temperatures will stick around, with highs topping out in the upper 40's through Saturday and Sunday under mostly sunny skies.

STAYING COOL NEXT WEEK:  Big weather story will be Hurricane Sandy which is off the coast of Jamaica as of Wednesday afternoon.  Models project Sandy to track north through the Atlantic, and possibly make landfall on the east coast of the U.S. by early Monday morning.  While we shouldn't see and precipitation from Sandy, the storm should be powerful enough to assist in yanking down cool air from Canada, that we may continue to see for the bulk of the next work week.  A lot can change from now until then, so stay tuned!

Warm, but Rainy Start to the Week

A low pressure system to our southwest and a series of upper level waves of energy will bring rain chances for the beginning of the week. Our best chance for showers and thunderstorms looks to be this morning through early afternoon, and then again early Tuesday morning.

Despite the cloud cover and rain, southerly winds will boost highs into the mid to upper 70s through Tuesday. Wednesday will bring sunshine and the potential for highs in the low 80s!

Our next storm system pulls in by Thursday night, bringing rain chances into Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will drop considerably for the end of the week. Highs will only reach the low 50s through the weekend. Thankfully, sunshine will be back by the start of next week.

Low Pressure Finally Moves On

Low Pressure Finally Moves On

After many days of a low pressure system sagging around Lake Michigan, it has finally moved on. As the low moved on so has the thicker clouds. As for the rest of the weekend, it looks to be very beautiful & warm! A weak disturbance will push through early Monday morning bringing more cloud cover and rain but luckily not much! QPF totals show about a .10" over most of Central Illinois and a chance for a .25" in the northern parts of the state.

TONIGHT: Mostly clear and cool. Lows in low 40s.

TOMORROW: Mostly clear and much warmer. Highs in low 70s.

MONDAY: Showers in early morning and lingering through late morning/early afternoon. Highs in low 70s.

Warmer Weekend

The slow moving low pressure system from the past few days continues to wrap up inside itself today. Look for scattered showers to continue on and off into the afternoon. with highs only reaching the low 50s at best.

We have a good chance at drying out for our last High School Game Day of the season. It will be cool and cloudy for game time, with temperatures in the mid 40s.

Rain moves out overnight, allowing lows to drop back into the upper 30s and low 40s. The weekend is looking sunny and warmer. Southerly winds will warm us up near 70 degrees by Sunday.

The warm up continues next week, with highs warming into the low to mid 70s through Wednesday. Another storm system will bring a chance at rain Monday night into Tuesday. We'll dry out for the middle of the week, before a cold front brings a chance at storms next Friday.

NOAA issues Winter Weather Outlook

The much anticipated NOAA Winter Weather Outlook was released today.  Here's a look at their forecast for temperatures and precipitation for the time period of December through February.

Some things to keep in mind with this forecast.  NOAA admits that this was a difficult forecast largely in part because El Nino has not progressed as anticipated.  Something also to keep in mind as you look at the maps is that this forecast does not provide forecasts for where and when snowstorms will occur, nor does it predict total seasonal snowfall accumulation.

As you look at the map, you notice that central Illinois is not included in any of the mentioned areas, and as such is classified in the "Equal Chances" category.   This does not mean that NOAA is predicting an average winter for us, rather it mentions that our area has equal chances of being warmer/drier than average, cooler/wetter than average, or average in both precipitation and temperature.

Something to remember:  We are coming off two extremes over the last to winters here in central Illinois.  Two years ago was the snowiest on record for central Illinois, topping out a 52.5 inches.  Last year was the 6th least snowiest on record, with only 11.5 inches.  We should average around 24.6" of snow each winter.    Keep in mind that the area still is dealing with drought conditions, which do not stop just because the growing season is nearing an end.  Droughts are cumulative, and can cause a huge problem if we continue on the trend from last winter for next years growing season.

Here's a link to the full NOAA Winter Weather Outlook

Cool Friday, Warmer Weekend

All new weather webcast can be found at the right hand of your screen.

COOL/RAINY NIGHT:  Strong area of low pressure hovers around the Great Lakes for the end of the week.  Mostly cloudy, scattered light rain, breezy conditions and chilly temperatures will be the norm.  Overnight lows fall to the upper 30's.

COOL FRIDAY:  Area of low pressure just to our north will continue the cool temperatures and rain chances for much of the morning and afternoon.  Gradual improvement as we head into the evening.  Highs top out in the mid 50's

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:  Rain should be out of the area for kick off, but still a bit breezy and chilly.  Kick off temperatures will hover near 50, and fall to the mid 40's by the drive home.

GREAT WEEKEND!  Sunshine returns to the area, with warming temperatures.  Highs on Saturday will top out in the lower 60's, and into the upper 60's on Sunday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:  Illinois State is at home against Missouri State (1pm).  Sunny and pleasant, with kick off temperatures in the upper 50's.  Illinois Wesleyan is in Wheaton, IL to take on Wheaton College (6pm).  Game time temps will be cool with mostly clear skies.  Temperatures at kickoff should be in the mid 50's.

STORMY MONDAY/TUESDAY:  Cold front look to take aim to start off the work week.  Showers and storms look possible Monday night into Tuesday.  Still to early to determine the chance for severe weather at this time.  Highs should return to the lower 70's to start the week.

Cool, Rainy End to the Week

Although we're dry to start things off this morning, scattered showers will build back in this afternoon. Moisture wrapping around yesterday's low pressure system will spread rain chances through the evening and overnight hours tonight. Look for cool highs in the low 50s and lows in the upper 30s and low 40s. On and off showers are possible through the day on Friday. It definitely won't be a wash out, but it could mean a few sprinkles for our last High School Game Day. Temperatures remain cool for the end of the work week. Sunshine returns this weekend, with southerly winds warming us into the upper 60s and low 70s by Sunday. We'll stay warm into next week, but a storm system will bring rain chances for Monday and Tuesday. Look for highs in the upper 60s and low 70s through the middle of next week.

Cooler Temperatures Moving In

All new weather webcast can be found at the right hand of your screen.

RAIN ENDS TONIGHT:  Showers & storms will move out by mid to late evening as a cold front pushes through the state.  Partly to mostly cloudy skies will remain overnight.  Lows in the lower 40's

WINDY/COOL THURSDAY:  Much cooler air will file in behind the front for the next few days.  Clouds will remain across the area as a strong area of low pressure camps out just to our north.  Highs will top out in the mid 50's, with windy conditions through the day.

LIGHT RAIN RETURNS?:  Strong area of low pressure will sag south, setting up just to our north on Thursday evening.  This could result in very light and chilly rain for our Thursday evening and overnight.  The same setup will exist for Friday as well.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:  Although there is a chance of rain on Friday, I believe that most of the area should be dry for kickoff for the final regular season week of high school football across the state.  It will be chilly & breezy.  Game time temps near 50, with winds kick up to 15-20mph.

Rainy & Cooler End to the Week

Cloud cover will increase through the day, with breezy southerly winds still bumping highs into the upper 60s and low 70s.

By this afternoon, an incoming cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms to central Illinois. We'll start with scattered showers around lunchtime, then a stronger line of storms will move through during the late afternoon and evening hours. Rain totals could be upwards of an inch, with strong winds and dangerous lightning also a possibility.

Storms will move out of the area by midnight tonight, as skies gradually clear into early Thursday. Lows will drop back into the low 40s. Much of Thursday will be partly cloudy and dry, before more showers build in late Thursday night. Wrap around moisture as the mid week low pressure system stalls out will keep rain chances through Friday. Good news is, we'll likely be dry just in time for High School Game Day Friday night.

Sunshine and southerly winds will help warm us up this weekend. Highs will be back up near 70 by Sunday. A slow moving storm system will bring rain chances back early next week. Thankfully, southerly winds will keep temperatures in the 60s for much of next week.

Strong/Severe Storms Tonight & Overnight

Strong/Severe Storms Tonight & Overnight

Strong to severe storms are likely tonight into the overnight. Models suggest strongest storms to be in northern Missouri, southwest Iowa and western edge of Illinois. While severe weather isn't expected for  most of central Illinois according to the NWS, there is still the chance an isolated tornado could produce. Main threat for central IL tonight/overnight is strong winds and hail.

Model redevelopment of storms overnight looks guaranteed. Again heavier rainfall in the northwest of IL but a strong line pushes through the entire area bringing heavy rain totals, strong winds and hail again. There will be periods of off/on rain through Sunday morning but brief. Cold front finally pushes through by late Sunday Afternoon/early evening; which is when rain & clouds will decrease.

Rainfall totals look pretty uniform across the region. Most all of central IL will get a minimum of .75" and stretching to over 2" in the northwest.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL:  Should be a good one for week 8 of the high school football season.  Clouds will slowly increase during the mid evening hours.  Kick off temps in the lower 50's, and with the clouds building in we shouldn't see too much sway in the end of game temps, hovering near 50 for the drive home.

TONIGHT:  Increasing clouds.  A few showers could develop after midnight.   Lows in the upper 40's and lower 50's

STORMS TOMORROW:   Warm front will pass overnight, putting us in a warm sector of storm system.  Cold front will not arrive to the region until late Saturday night.  Strongest severe potential looks to be well west of central Illinois, back into southern Iowa and northern Missouri.  We still remain on the eastern edge of the standard slight risk, issued by the storms predictions center.  Damaging winds, with an isolated tornado will be the primary concerns.  Storms should clear the area by Sunday morning.

DRYING OUT FOR END OF WEEKEND:  As mentioned before, storms should make their way out of the area by Sunday morning.  Partly cloudy skies and cooling temperatures will continue into the afternoon.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY:  The Illinois State Redbirds are at home against Youngstown State (1pm), and the Illinois Wesleyan Titans are at home against Carthage College (1:30pm).  Scattered showers & storms can be expected, with some severe storms possible.  Game time temps should be in the upper 60's.  University of Illinois Fighting Illini will head up to the "Big House" in Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on the University of Michigan (2:30pm).    Mostly cloudy conditions with the threat for scattered showers through much of the afternoon.  Game time temp should be in the mid to upper 50's.

Strong Storms Saturday

High pressure will keep us clear and cool today, with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. It looks like a great night for football, too. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 50s for High School Game Day.

A low pressure system moving in from the west will increase cloud cover overnight. Lows will only drop back to about 50 degrees. As a warm front pulls north, we'll see showers and thunderstorms developing early Saturday morning. Strong southerly winds will boost daytime highs into the mid 70s.

After a break in the rain, a cold front on Saturday night will bring a chance of strong to severe storms. A line of storms will move in from the west, bringing the threat of damaging winds. Storms will pull east overnight, lasting into Sunday morning.

We'll dry out by Sunday night, with highs in the mid to upper 60s for the end of the weekend. Monday and Tuesday will see a bit more sun, bumping highs into the upper 60s and low 70s. Another storm system will move through during the middle of next week, bringing rain for Wednesday and Thursday. Highs will end up in the low 60s by the end of next week.
