A Dry Spring, but Rain on the Way

This month, as well as spring has been abnormally dry across central Illinois.  While we have seen a few showers here and there across the area for the month, it has been several weeks since a significant rain has fallen across the area.

Our best rain chance in quite some time will roll in Thursday, as an upper level low moves into the region.  Showers should start just after midnight to the north, and filling in across the area through the morning and afternoon hours on Thursday.

The rain does come at a price.  Significantly cooler temperatures will roll into the region for Thursday and Friday, with Thursday being the coolest of the two days, running a good 20° below average for the last day of May.

Another round of showers will be possible on Saturday, giving us a 3 day total possibility of between 1-2" of new rain.

Rain and Cooler Temps on the Way.

A great chance for rain, plus sharply cooler temperatures to end the work week.

TONIGHT:  Increasing clouds.  Overnight showers possible.  Lows around 50.

TOMORROW:  Cloudy with showers & storms likely.  Chilly.  Highs in the middle 50's

TOMORROW NIGHT:  Showers and storms continue.  Chilly.  Lows in the middle 40's

TONIGHT:  Mostly clear & cooler.  Lows in the lower 50's

TOMORROW:  Mostly sunny.  Pleasant.  Highs in the lower 70's

TOMORROW NIGHT:  Mostly clear & cool.  Lows around 50.

SATURDAY:  Partly cloudy.  Highs near 70.

SUNDAY:  Partly cloudy.  Warmer. Highs near 80.

Cooler & Drier Midweek

A cold front from last night will leave cooler and drier air across Central Illinois for today and tomorrow. Skies will continue to clear this afternoon, leaving us with sunshine and highs in the low 80s.

High pressure building in from the northwest will continue to drop highs for Wednesday. Despite sunshine, we'll only see the low 70s tomorrow afternoon. By Wednesday night, cloud cover will increase as a low pressure system approaches from the south. This will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday.

Because we'll be north of the warm front (on the cool side) for the duration of the event, cloud cover and rain will keep highs in the mid 60s. Southerly winds and sunshine will help warm us back into the 80s for much of next week.

Hot and Windy Thursday

The tightening pressure gradient as a cold front approaches the area is bringing strong winds to Central Illinois. A *Wind Advisory* is in effect until 8 PM tonight for the entire viewing area. Wind gusts upwards of 40 mph will impact driving, mainly on East-West highways. You may want to bring in any trash cans or patio furniture just to be safe.

By the evening hours, the cold front will increase cloud cover starting in the west. A line of showers and thunderstorms will build along the front, pulling through overnight. These storms will be quick moving and will leave the area by early Friday morning.

A few of the initial storms, between about 7 and 10 PM tonight, could be strong to severe. The best chance looks to be in our very western and northwestern counties, with large hail and damaging winds as the primary threat.

The cold front will stall and then move north as a warm front tomorrow, keeping cloud cover in the area for the end of the week. It could also mean a few more showers and thunderstorms in the north on Friday night. We will likely dry things out for the weekend as the warm front continues to charge north. A building upper level ridge of high pressure will ensure sunshine, as southerly winds pump in hot and humid air from the Gulf region. Highs will be oppressively warm, in the low to mid 90.

The next chance for rain will come on Monday as a cold front slides into the area once again. The best chance for showers and thunderstorms associated with the front will be Monday night into Tuesday. Temperatures will drop into the 70s behind that system, with another chance at rain on Thursday.

Here Comes the Heat

New weather webcast can be found at the right hand of your screen.

Heat and humidity return to central Illinois in a big way over the next several days.

TONIGHT:  Mostly clear & mild.  Lows near 60.

TOMORROW:  Mostly sunny.  Hot, humid & windy.  Highs near 90.

TOMORROW NIGHT:  Partly cloudy with a stray shower or storm possible.  Lows in the middle 60's.

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Hot & humid.  Highs in the middle 90's

MEMORIAL DAY:  Partly cloudy with scattered showers & storms.  Highs around 90.

Warming Through the Weekend

After a few morning clouds, sun will build in for this afternoon. Add in southerly winds, and today's highs will reach the low 80s.

We'll warm up even more on Thursday as winds gust up to 40 mph out of the south. Sunshine will help boost temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s. After a dry daytime, a cold front Thursday night into Friday could bring a few isolated storms to the area. We've been pretty dry as of late, so most of this activity will not make it to the surface. In fact, most of us have a chance at staying dry through the weekend.

As Thursday night's cold front stalls out over the area on Friday, cloud cover will build during the day on Friday. We should still be in the warm sector though, with highs in the mid to upper 80s. The front will slide north as a warm front over the weekend. A building ridge of upper level high pressure will also build north Saturday and Sunday, really pumping in the warm air. Look for highs to reach the low 90s, feeling even warmer because of increased humidity.

The best chance at rain over the next 8 days will come Monday and Tuesday of next week. A cold front will slowly edge into Central Illinois on Memorial Day sparking up showers and thunderstorms as early as the afternoon. The best chance of rain will be overnight and into Tuesday morning. Temperatures will cool into the 70s for much of next week.

Tracking Holiday Weekend Heat

Temperatures will remain comfortable for Wednesday, with highs in the lower 80's with fairly low humidity.

Dew points will start to rise for Thursday, along with temperatures, causing for a pretty uncomfortable afternoon.

Heat index values could surpass the mid 90's Thursday afternoon.

A weak cold front swing just north of central Illinois on Friday, leaving us dry and warm to end of the week.  An early season hot dome of air will settle in for the weekend, bringing the hottest air of the season the area for the holiday.

Highs on Saturday and Sunday are forecasted in the mid 90's.  Record high for Saturday is 95°, and Sunday is 94°

Tropical Storm Alberto

Hurricane season is off to an early start this year, as Alberto became a Tropical Storm over the weekend. Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, but storms this early are not uncommon. The last time one formed this early was Tropical Storm Ana back in 2003.

It may not look like much, just off the northeast Florida coast, but this season's first tropical storm is packing sustained winds at about 40 mph. Tropical storm Alberto is currently moving East at about 7 mph, but will soon take more of a northeasterly turn as an upper level trof helps to push it farther out to sea. As it turns, it will pick up some speed and weaken to a tropical depression by Wednesday.

The storm won't have much impact to land, other than dangerous surf conditions off the coast of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina today.

Warm Saturday, Rain Sunday

Our work week ends with yet another sunny and warm day. Southerly winds will team up with sunshine to bump us up into the mid 80s for highs.

On Saturday, the southerly winds will help push us into the upper 80s. With humidity, though, it will feel muggy and even warmer. Sunday will be slightly cooler as a storm system moves in.

Sunday will finally bring a change to the quiet weather pattern, tapping into Saturday's moisture to bring a chance of rain. A cold front slicing through Sunday into Monday will spark up showers and thunderstorms. The best chances look to be Sunday night into Monday Morning.

Sunny & Warming

A quick cold front this morning has left a few high clouds for this afternoon. Still, we'll see mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid 70s. Once the sun sets, clear skies and calming winds will drop temperatures pretty quickly. We'll drop into the 50s by midnight, with lows in the mid to upper 40s.

A warm front on Thursday and Friday will bring a few more clouds back to the area, but will also bump highs back up into the 80s. We'll see highs in the mid to upper 80s by Saturday!

Sunday will bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms back to the area, possibly lasting into Monday. Expect highs to drop back a few degrees, likely starting next week in the mid 70s. Behind that system, skies will clear and temperatures will warm into the mid 80s by the middle of next week.

A Few Showers Tonight-Cooler Tomorrow

A weak cold front will start to push through the region later on this evening.

Most areas should stay dry during the evening hours, but a few places could see a quick downpour as the front moves through.

Following the front, a push of cooler and drier air will move into the region.  Temperatures will top out in the mid 70's across the area.

Staying Warm

A stray shower possible this evening, with the rest of the week very dry and warm.

TONIGHT:  Partly cloudy with a scattered shower or storm possible.  Lows in the middle 50's

Chance of Storms Tonight

High pressure has kept our skies clear for the past few days, but tonight a cold front brings a chance of storms.

Sunshine and breezy winds out of the west and southwest will warm us up in a big way this afternoon. Highs today will be about 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, in the low to mid 80s.

By tonight, a cold front will move in from the northwest, building up a bit of cloud cover by the evening. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to form in a line along the front, pushing southeast overnight.

A few of the initial, more isolated storms that develop have the potential to be strong to severe. The best chance for that will be north of our area, but a few of the stronger storms could trail south before sunset. Small hail and gusty winds will be the primary threat for our northernmost counties. Storms will decrease in intensity after dark.

Another cool, dry high pressure system will build in on Wednesday morning bringing clear skies back to Central Illinois. We'll likely stay sunny for much of the end of the work week, with temperatures warming quickly back into the 80s. On Sunday, a cold front pulling through will spark up a few showers and thunderstorms in the area. Behind that system, temperatures will drop back into the 70s for early next week.

Warm Friday, Weekend Rain?

High pressure moves to our east for Friday, allowing for warmer temperatures across the area.

A weak cold front will sag into the region as we head into the weekend.  Clouds will build for Friday night, with a few scattered showers sparking Saturday morning into the afternoon.  Any rain chance should be brief across the area.

Temperatures will hold to around average for this time of year, topping out in the lower 70's.

A Warm End to the Week

New weather webcast is located at the right hand of your screen.

Sunny & Warm End to the Week

High pressure will make for a beautiful end to the work week. Dry air will keep us sunny this afternoon, with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s. Clear skies overnight will quickly drop temperatures into the upper 40s and low 50s. But adding southerly winds tomorrow will help us rebound into the mid to upper 70s for highs on Friday.

The weekend will bring a few changes as a cold front moves in on Saturday. As it slowly stalls out over Illinois, showers and thunderstorms will begin to develop. We're not expecting a wash out, just a few passing storms during the day.

A few showers could last us into Sunday morning, but for the most part, Mother's Day is looking dry. Highs for the weekend will reach the upper 60s and low 70s.

Rain the Past Few Weeks

Over the past two weeks, Central Illinois has seen several storm systems move through, bringing heavy rain to the area. But have we been able to overcome the deficit of precipitation from the beginning of the year? Here is a map of the rain recorded in the past 14 days:

Peoria saw over two inches of rain fall at the airport in the past two weeks. Since January 1st, we've seen 8.44" of precipitation. That is still 2.52" below normal. Parts of Marshall county saw over 10 inches in the same time frame, pushing most locations above average.

At the time, strong storms created a Flash Flooding danger for counties in the northern half of our viewing area. Although that threat has died down, we still have some river flooding in the area. Flood Warnings are in effect along the Illinois River in Bureau and La Salle Counties.

Current River Stages
Near La Salle- 21.63' (Minor Flooding)
At Ottawa- 463.19' (Minor Flooding)

The next 8 days are looking mostly dry. We could see a few sprinkles in the north this afternoon and tomorrow, but most of us will stay sunny and dry for the rest of the work week. A better chance at showers and thunderstorms will move in this weekend. A cold front will team up with an upper level wave to pop up a few storms Saturday night into Sunday.

Monday, May 7, 2012

Quiet Week on the Way

New weather webcast can be found at the right hand portion of your screen.

After a soggy weekend, a much more quiet and cooler weather pattern is on the way.

TONIGHT:  Decreasing clouds & cooler.  Lows in the lower 50's

WEDNESDAY:  Mostly sunny & cooler.  Highs in the middle 60's

FRIDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Highs in the lower 70's

SATURDAY & MOTHERS DAY:  Partly cloudy with scattered showers & storms.  Highs in the lower 70's

Cooler and Drier Week

After a rainy and muggy start to the morning, a cold front pushing southeast will mean a dry afternoon. Northerly winds will keep temperatures today in the low 70s, with overnight lows in the low 50s.

Skies will begin clearing overnight, staying sunny into Tuesday.  A quick, weak cold front and upper level burst of energy could bring a few showers/thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon, but most of us will stay dry through the week. A high pressure system will ensure plenty of sunshine for Thursday and Friday, but highs will still only reach the upper 60s and low 70s.

Our next best chance at rain is with a low pressure system next weekend. A stalled out cold front will start storm chances Saturday afternoon, lasting into Sunday. Hopefully we'll catch some clearing by Mother's Day afternoon.
