The tightening pressure gradient as a cold front approaches the area is bringing strong winds to Central Illinois. A *Wind Advisory* is in effect until 8 PM tonight for the entire viewing area. Wind gusts upwards of 40 mph will impact driving, mainly on East-West highways. You may want to bring in any trash cans or patio furniture just to be safe.
By the evening hours, the cold front will increase cloud cover starting in the west. A line of showers and thunderstorms will build along the front, pulling through overnight. These storms will be quick moving and will leave the area by early Friday morning.
A few of the initial storms, between about 7 and 10 PM tonight, could be strong to severe. The best chance looks to be in our very western and northwestern counties, with large hail and damaging winds as the primary threat.
The cold front will stall and then move north as a warm front tomorrow, keeping cloud cover in the area for the end of the week. It could also mean a few more showers and thunderstorms in the north on Friday night. We will likely dry things out for the weekend as the warm front continues to charge north. A building upper level ridge of high pressure will ensure sunshine, as southerly winds pump in hot and humid air from the Gulf region. Highs will be oppressively warm, in the low to mid 90.
The next chance for rain will come on Monday as a cold front slides into the area once again. The best chance for showers and thunderstorms associated with the front will be Monday night into Tuesday. Temperatures will drop into the 70s behind that system, with another chance at rain on Thursday.
