DANGEROUS HEAT EXPECTED TODAY

The center of the country will experience well above average temperatures for the next week. Today will likely be the hottest of the year so far. Look for highs to reach the upper 90s and low 100's this afternoon. Heat indices could get as high as 110°. This will pose a danger to anyone who spends long periods of time outside. A HEAT ADVISORY has been issued for all of central Illinois until 7 PM on Friday. The best way to stay safe, is to spend the day in an air conditioned building. If you must go outside, be sure to take plenty of breaks indoors or in the shade. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages that can dehydrate you. Remember to reapply sunscreen through the day to avoid getting burnt.

An Ozone Alert has been issued for Central Illinois. Today will be unhealthy for sensitive groups to be outside. Anyone with respiratory problems or sensitivity to pollutants should avoid going outside. Everyone should avoid driving to limit the amount of pollutants released into the air.

Even though a cold front will slide in from the north and stall out over the area for the next few days, we won't see much relief from the heat. Highs through the weekend and into next week are expected to reach at least the low to mid 90s.

Thankfully, several chances for rain are possible starting as early as tonight. Several waves of upper level energy will begin sliding through tonight and will continue through the weekend. As those interact with the stalled out front, scattered thunderstorms will develop. It won't be a total wash out though, if you plan to start your 4th of July festivities early. After a building high pressure gives us a dry start to the week, an upper level trough could bring storm chances back by Wednesday.
