Drought Update

Updated drought monitor issued earlier today shows little change. Severe drought just south and southeast of the Illinois river, with the rest of the area under a moderate drought. Outlook to break up the drought looks grim, with very minor rain chances over the next 7-10 days.

DANGEROUS HEAT EXPECTED TODAY

The center of the country will experience well above average temperatures for the next week. Today will likely be the hottest of the year so far. Look for highs to reach the upper 90s and low 100's this afternoon. Heat indices could get as high as 110°. This will pose a danger to anyone who spends long periods of time outside. A HEAT ADVISORY has been issued for all of central Illinois until 7 PM on Friday. The best way to stay safe, is to spend the day in an air conditioned building. If you must go outside, be sure to take plenty of breaks indoors or in the shade. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages that can dehydrate you. Remember to reapply sunscreen through the day to avoid getting burnt.

An Ozone Alert has been issued for Central Illinois. Today will be unhealthy for sensitive groups to be outside. Anyone with respiratory problems or sensitivity to pollutants should avoid going outside. Everyone should avoid driving to limit the amount of pollutants released into the air.

Even though a cold front will slide in from the north and stall out over the area for the next few days, we won't see much relief from the heat. Highs through the weekend and into next week are expected to reach at least the low to mid 90s.

Thankfully, several chances for rain are possible starting as early as tonight. Several waves of upper level energy will begin sliding through tonight and will continue through the weekend. As those interact with the stalled out front, scattered thunderstorms will develop. It won't be a total wash out though, if you plan to start your 4th of July festivities early. After a building high pressure gives us a dry start to the week, an upper level trough could bring storm chances back by Wednesday.

Some ways to take action to keep the air clean and healthy would include.

-Minimizing or eliminating driving
-Trip-chaining (running errands in the same trip, rather than multiple separate trips)
-Refueling vehicles only in the evening.

Remaining Dry This Week

The 5 day outlook for rain again looks very bleak, with only spotty shower chances in the forecast for Friday, Saturday & Sunday.  At best, model guidance suggests we could receive around 0.25" across much of the area for that time period.  Here is the latest 5 day outlook from the HPC:

Tropical Storm Debby Update

4pm update for Tropical Storm Debby:

While Debby doesn't look to intensify over the next few days, flooding will be a huge concern along the Gulf coast in Florida.  Models indicate the potential for up to 20"+ over the next 5 days.

Comfortable Start to the Work Week

A quick cold front early this morning has left us with cooler temperatures and breezy northeasterly winds today. Wind gusts as high as 25 mph will pull in drier air and keep today's highs in the upper 70s and low 80s. Winds will slowly die down overnight, with clear skies dropping temperatures quickly. We'll be around 60 by midnight and in the mid 50s for morning lows.

Clear skies will stick around for the day on Tuesday as a high pressure system reinforces the dry air. Look for highs tomorrow to hit the low to mid 80s.

Wednesday and Thursday will also bring sunshine as a warm front approaches from the west. As the front pulls northeast, a major burst of heat will filter into the Midwest. We'll see highs on Wednesday hit the low 90s, before upper 90s and triple digits are possible on Thursday.

An unsettled upper level weather pattern will shoot several waves of energy our way Friday through Sunday. As of right now, it looks like our best chance for storms with those waves will be on Friday and Saturday afternoon. Despite the cloud cover and rain chances, highs through the weekend will still hit the low 90s. The sun will return next week as a ridge of high pressure builds north. Look for the 90s to stick around until at least Tuesday.

Severe Drought Conditions

A large portion of Central Illinois has been upgraded from Moderate to Severe Drought conditions. Although we were able to get some rain last Saturday and again on Thursday, it hasn't been enough to pick us up out of our slump. For the month of June, Peoria has seen 2.09" of rain. That's 0.37" below normal for the month. Year to date, we are 5.29" below where we should be.

During a Severe Drought, crop or pasture losses are likely, fire risk is very high, water shortages become common, and water restrictions may be imposed (U.S. Drought Monitor). Counties in our area currently classified as Severe Drought include Cass, Crawford, De Witt, Logan, Mason, McLean, Menard, Tazewell, and Woodford. The rest are qualified as a Moderate Drought.

Farmers say an inch of rain a week would be very beneficial, but storms may be hard to come by over the next 8 days. A leftover storms system from the west on Saturday night could bring a few storms to the area, with a few more possible on Sunday night as a cold front slides south. After a cooler and very dry start to next week, a quick wave of upper level energy could pop a few storms on Thursday. A more organized system will drop in from the north next Saturday bring a better chance for rain.

Hot & Humid This Week

Breezy conditions along with muggy temperatures will hang around for Monday evening.

Heat and humidity will continue into the day on Tuesday, as well as the gusty winds.  Highs should be hovering around 90 for the mid day, and well into the mid 90's for Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday will also be hot, and less windy, with highs topping out in the middle 90's.  Our next rain chance looks to arrive Thursday morning, which will also bring some relief from the hot and humid weather.

Hot & Humid Conditions Continue This Week

Steamy temps with windy conditions stick around for the first half of the work week.

TONIGHT:  Mostly clear.  Breezy & warm.  Lows in the lower 70's

TOMORROW:  Mostly sunny.  Hot & windy.  Highs in the lower to middle 90's

WEDNESDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Hot & humid.  Highs in the middle 90's

THURSDAY:  Partly cloudy with scattered showers & storms.  Highs in the middle 80's

FRIDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Highs in the upper 80's.

Hot & Humid

A WIND ADVISORY has been issued for much of Central Illinois until 7 PM tonight. Wind gusts as high as 40-45 mph out of the southwest are possible this afternoon. High profile vehicles should use extra caution and any loose patio furniture or garbage cans should be brought inside.

A building ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere will keep skies clear today and tomorrow. Add that to the southerly winds pumping in heat and humidity and highs will reach the low to mid 90s this afternoon. Dewpoints will hover in the mid 60s today, making it feel even hotter. Heat index values will stay in the mid 90s for much of the afternoon. Make sure to drink plenty of water, limit time outside, and check on elderly friends and neighbors.

The heat will stick around for much of the week, with upper 80s and low 90s expected through the weekend. Our only chance at a bit of relief will be with a cold front on Thursday. By Wednesday night, the front will begin edging into the area. As it passes on Thursday, showers and thunderstorms are likely to pass through during the day.

Another cold front will edge into the area over the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms are likely to pop up Saturday night and into the day on Sunday. This may drop temperatures a bit more, but it won't last long. Southerly winds are likely to push us back up into the mid to upper 80s by next Tuesday.

SUNDAY:  Partly cloudy with a few isolated showers possible.  Highs in the upper 80's

MONDAY & TUESDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Hot & humid.  Highs in the lower 90's

Father's Day Forecast

We're rounding out the work week on a warm and sunny note. High pressure will keep us clear today with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s through the weekend. Humidity will also increase over the next few days, as southerly winds pump in more moisture.

An upper level trough of low pressure to our north will slide east into Saturday. Cloud cover will increase slowly tonight and tomorrow. A cold front will move east into Saturday night, providing enough lift to pop up showers and thunderstorms. We'll have to overcome some dry air at first, so most of the activity will be confined to the evening and overnight hours.

A few storms may stick around on Sunday morning, with a few more possible as the cold front stalls over Illinois in the afternoon. Despite the rain, the heat will stick with us for Father's Day.

High pressure will begin clearing us out on Monday and will last through the middle of the week. Depending on when a low pressure system is able to break that high down will determine our next chance at rain. As of right now, it looks like next Thursday will be the most likely candidate. Temperatures will drop a bit behind that system, with low to mid 80s by next weekend.

Cooler, Drier Midweek

Last night's cold front is leaving us much more comfortable today. Sunny skies will stick with us this afternoon, with much less humidity in the air. After dew points in the mid to upper 60s yesterday, they've settled back into the 40s today. Anything below 60 is ideal for comfort. Highs this afternoon will be about 5-10 degrees cooler than yesterday, only reaching the upper 70s. A few clouds are possible with a wave of upper level energy on Wednesday, but most of us will stay sunny and dry for the rest of the week. Temperatures will slowly warm into the mid to upper 80s by Friday. High pressure building from the south will keep skies clear for Father's Day weekend. Southerly winds will keep pumping in the warmth into early next week. Highs will reach the upper 80s and low 90s into Monday. Sadly, our very dry streak continues all the way through the middle of next week.

Monday, June 11, 2012

Dry Conditions Continue

Our lone rain chance this week has come and gone.  Temperatures will return to the near normal range for most of this week.

TONIGHT:  Decreasing clouds.  Cooler.  Lows in the upper 50's

TOMORROW:  Mostly sunny. Comfortable.  Highs in the upper 70's

TOMORROW NIGHT:  Mostly clear.  Lows in the middle 50's

FRIDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Highs in the middle to upper 80's

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY:  Mostly sunny.  Hot and a little more muggy.  Highs near 90.

Dry Again After Today

Showers and thunderstorms in the area today are helping with our rain deficit, but not by much. Peoria has only seen 9.86" of precipitation since January 1st. That's 5.66" below normal for this time of year. This number is low enough that the National Drought Mitigation Center has classified part of Central Illinois as experiencing D1 drought conditions, which is the second level of a five tier long term drought severity index. This will have an impact on crops, as they are already in need of water from the dry spring.

The forecast for the next 8-14 days isn't looking to bring much relief. The Climate Prediction Center gives Central Illinois a 40% chance of seeing below average precipitation. Add in a 50% chance at above average temperatures and the end of June will be much like this past spring, hot and dry.

Today's shower and thunderstorm activity is courtesy of a cold front to our northwest. As it slowly slides southeast today and tonight, scattered storms will develop in our area. Here is a look at the radar as of about 11:05 am:

Once the cold front passes through tonight, a cooler, drier high pressure system will settle in for Tuesday. Despite sunshine, high temperatures tomorrow will be about 5-10 degrees cooler than today. By the end of the week, a ridge of high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere will build over the eastern half of the US. This will keep us sunny and dry into next week, with a big warm up for the weekend.

Record Warmth for the US

For many cities in Central Illinois, this spring (March, April, May) was the warmest on record. Peoria's average temperature for the three months was 59.2°. But we weren't the only ones above normal. The United States just completed its second warmest May on record, making this the warmest spring ever for our country. It surpassed the previous record by 2.0° F. These maps from the National Climatic Data Center break down temperature and precipitation deviations from normal state by state.

Our warm spring is just a part of a warm 2012. We are currently experiencing the warmest year-to-date and the warmest 12-month period in the nation's recorded history.

This weekend will be above normal with plenty of sunshine. Increasing southerly winds will bump up heat and humidity through Sunday. Highs are expected to reach the upper 80s and low 90s, with heat index values in the low 90s as well.

Next week will bring relief from the heat and some much needed rain back to the forecast. A cold front Monday into Tuesday will pop up strong thunderstorms, mainly Monday night. Cooler upper 70s and low 80s are expected through the middle of next week.

Soggy Start to an Otherwise Dry Week

 AS OF 11:00 AM
A few waves of upper level energy are moving in from the northwest today, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the area. Most of the activity will move south, allowing for some sunshine this afternoon. Most of us will see highs reach the upper 70s, but where sun has already set up in the southwest, expect warmer highs in the low 80s.

We'll likely be dry and comfortable this evening with temperatures in the low 70s, cooling back into the mid 50s for lows overnight.

The rest of the work week is looking about average for this time of year, with an unsettled upper level pattern keeping partly cloudy skies around through mid week. Southerly winds will start us on a warm up on Thursday. A ridge of high pressure will bring in some sunshine and boost us into the mid 80s this weekend. We'll see dry conditions until Tuesday of next week, when a low pressure system to our north allows some shower activity to spill into our area.
